Comments

Geotech Engineering & Testing, Inc. provided the complete structural engineering design services for the new corporate headquarters for Crounse Corporation located at the riverfront in historic downtown Paducah, Kentucky.

The structural design for this project was unique in many ways. Due to the “open space” feeling the architect was striving for, coupled with the fact that the building is located in close proximity to the New Madrid fault line, the lateral force resisting system of the structure had to be significant, yet remain hidden from view. This was accomplished by utilizing a dual lateral system consisting of both steel moment frames and vertical braces. The entire structure was modeled using RISA building system, a specialized structural software program.

Structural elements included in the design are a 125 foot long radial glass wall with a balcony that cantilevers 12 feet out from the radial wall. In addition, one-third of the building is suspended over a parking area in order to provide LEED credits. The main entry into the building includes a monumental stair along with a clearstory framed with exposed stainless steel.
