The I-57 Widening and Interchange project consists of two miles of interstate including an overpass bridge and redesign of all eight ramps.  The existing interstate roadway has four 12’ lanes with 8’ inside shoulders (6’ paved) and 12’ outside shoulders (10’ paved).  The interchange design is a cloverleaf design with eight ramps.  The design will add one lane in each direction to I-57 to add capacity.  All eight ramps will be redesigned to correct the substandard existing condition.  Other projects at each end of the tie points on I-57 and all ramps will be ongoing and incorporated in the final design.   Due to high traffic volumes, maintenance of traffic is of the utmost importance.  Fourteen phases and 87 sub-phases have been designed to allow traffic to operate on I-57 and ramps at all times.

The widening of IL Rt. 13 consists of widening the existing roadway from 4 to 6 lanes.  The existing roadway has four 12’ lanes with 12’ shoulders (10’ paved) and is separated by a raised median.  The roadway will be overlaid and widened to the outside to include two additional 12’ lanes in each direction.  A new shoulder will be constructed and the raised median will be widened slightly.  Three signalized intersections exist throughout the project limits.  Due to traffic volumes, two lanes of traffic will be maintained at all times.  Existing drainage structures will be utilized when manageable.  All work will be done inside the existing right of way.
